The weather in the Sahara can be extremely hot during the summer months. Therefore, if you are traveling in this season, it is better to spend the second night in a desert hotel rather than in a camp. While some of our camps are equipped with air conditioning, a hotel with a pool will allow you to cool off, relax, and have more fun.
On the other hand, during the winter months, the desert offers a milder climate, making it ideal to spend two nights in the camp for a more immersive and magical experience under the starry skies.
After breakfast in Fes, we’ll depart south across the Middle Atlas Mountains. Along the way, we will pass through Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco,” and stop to see the cedar forests of Azrou, home to the Barbary macaque monkeys.
We continue through Midelt, crossing the gorgeous Ziz Valley with its beautiful nature and palm groves before reaching Merzouga. Here, you will switch to camels for a trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes to your first night in a desert camp or hotel, depending on your preference. Dinner and overnight in the desert.
This day is dedicated to exploring the Sahara region. After showering and breakfast in your camp ,we’ll start a 4×4 off-road tour around the dunes of Erg Chebbi, visiting nomadic families, the village of Khamlia for traditional Gnawa music, and old mines in Mefis. You’ll also see seasonal lakes and oases, depending on the time of year.
In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy another camel ride, Sandboard or relax at your accommodation. Spend your second night in either the camp (recommended in winter) or a desert hotel with a pool (ideal in summer).
After breakfast, we ‘ll leave the magical Merzouga Sahara and drive to Rissani, it’s famous for its traditional weekly market. We then head towards the dramatic Todra Gorge, where you can walk between its towering cliffs and river.
In the afternoon, we continue through the Dades Valley, with stops for panoramic views and photos of the unique rock formations known as “Monkey Fingers.” Dinner and overnight in the Dades Hotel overlooking the green valley.
After breakfast in your hotel, we’ll follow the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco.” Here, you can visit the famous film studios or the Kasbah of Taourirt.
We then explore the UNESCO listed Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a stunning example of Moroccan earthen architecture. In the afternoon, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, arriving in Marrakech by evening. End of our 4 days sahara desert trip from Fes to Marrakech via Merzouga.
My family of 4 adults had a great 4 day itinerary from Fes to Sahara desert by ending in Marrakech. The highlight was definitely spending two nights in the Sahara desert camp. Waking up to the sunrise over the dunes, enjoying traditional Berber music under a sky full of stars, and riding camels through the sand was simply magical. The camp was comfortable, well-organized, and the hospitality was exceptional.
